lost capture scratch how to relink media
Posted by Amanda Smith on December 7, 2010 at 9:53 pmI recently had an editor’s hard drive crash. He had a copy of the finished fcp project but not the capture scratch. I have back ups of the original source footage but he changed all the clip names. I have no visual references to what clips were which. is there a way to relink this media. I know you can do a batch capture with tape that has a time code but without it is there anything similar that can be done with this kind of source media?

Shouldn’t matter at all. Batch capture will recapture tape and tapeless media regardless of the name change. It looks at the time code, the reel name, and the 32 character universal clip ID number. Is this footage tape based, or tapeless?

Don’t relink…batch capture. REIMPORT.

Tapeless? Same thing. Attach the drive with the source archived footage, then do a Batch Capture.

Hi Shane. This is interesting – I thought the golden rule with tapeless was “don’t change the file names”
Is this dependent on the original media being imported using Log & Transfer, rather than just dragging files in natively from Finder? For instance, I use a Calibrated plugin so that I don’t have to L&T EX3 files into FCP. I’m pretty sure telling FCP to batch capture these files opens up the Log and Capture window, meaning you can’t re-import the files but I might be remembering wrong. Same with if you edit RED proxy files. Thanks,

December 7, 2010 at 10:35 pmIf you didn’t use Log and Transfer, then you can’t batch capture. Not sure what to do if you use Calibrated to import…and you lose the media. I haven’t tested that. WHy not email them and ask for advice?

December 7, 2010 at 11:58 pmGood idea. I’ve emailed Calibrated and will post their reply here.
It would be the same if one was editing a RED or DSLR project using ProRes conversions if the transcoding was done outside of FCP (eg with MPEG Streamclip or Clipfinder).
Shane, you’ve mentioned in other posts that you use Grinder for your DSLR conversions. Presumably the same issue could arise with files converted with Grinder, or does Grinder manage the metadata better than that? I don’t know whether or not the .THM files contain ‘original clip name’ metadata. Thanks,

December 8, 2010 at 12:13 amI use Grinder for the quick family videos I want to get done and out the door…the FAST edits. When I am working on a professional show, I use Log and Transfer, as REEL number and TIMECODE are pretty important. And the need to batch capture as well.
I use Calibrated only for rush rush jobs. Until I figure out what to do when…what happens to you happens.

Renaming the backed up files is easy, using this:https://www.videotoolshed.com/product/41/fcpreconnect/3
Do make a few copies of your project.
Besides filename / location / TC / Reel, FCP also has a ‘memory’
for clips (that can help you or bite you, depending on what you are trying to do)hth,

December 8, 2010 at 10:50 amHi Shane,
It hasn’t happened to me, I just thought it was an interesting topic. BTW Calibrated maintains TC and reel name as well.
I had a response from Calibrated. A summary of the key points is below:
Renaming the MP4 files will basically ‘destroy’ the BPAV folder structure and confuse FCP.
Calibrated is a QuickTime Import component which enables FCP to use the MP4 file just like a MOV file. It’s then up to FCP to properly keep track of everything.
It sounds like between doing it the proper way with Log & Transfer and with Bouke’s tool for jobs done without L&T, the situation is easily remedied anyway, which is good to know.

December 8, 2010 at 1:26 pmHi Bouke,
Does your software also work with MP4 files?
Thanks,

Not yet, but i could make it (partly) so.
I have not much experience with Mp4. If it is Sony stuff, the TC is probably in the XML (as well as in the file itself).
However, setting it is a different thing. (In the XML is of course no problem, but setting it in the file itself is a bit more work.)
But the biggest problem is the Reelname. No idea how that works with Mp4.
(Nor with MXF / DPX / Cineon, as i also want to support. TC is easy, Reelname is not…)If i can find that one out (feel free to help), i could add the functionality. Renaming the files is of course no problem, but that might cause other trouble if the file is part of a complex folder structure.
So it really depends on a lot of factors.
Exporting the Mp4’s to fresh QT (refs) for FCP to relink is probably the easiest way then.Bouke

December 10, 2011 at 11:05 pmShane,
Just letting you know you made my saturday night. I had lost the links of an FCP project recently. I googled and found your thread from about a YEAR ago. Within minutes, I was back on track, all of the acid had left my stomach and I am now preparing for a great saturday night.
Thanks so much for the help.
Regards,
Ty Ford
