I know this is the After Effects forum, but I needed some advice and I thought I might get a more well-rounded answer here than I would in the individual forums. Here goes:

I am an editor, first and foremost, who has gotten more heavily into effects work (and, thus, After Effects) over the years. I am now looking to add 3D animation to my skill set, but am wondering into which platform I should invest my time, money, and effort? I used to do some 3D character animation in Animation: Master by Hash, but that was more of a hobby. Here are details/considerations that may help you when responding:

    1. I am currently Mac based, as I mostly do FCP (though I am now doing a lot of Avid work on a PC…but not my PC and not my Avid). At home, I am Mac Pro, and that is where I find most of my freelance work.

    2. I am looking for something to enhance my effects and motion graphics work more so than any sort of character animation. I love character animation, and had a lot of fun doing it, but it is not my profession and I don’t expect to ever get paid to do it.

    3. I realize all of the programs (i.e. 3DSMax, Maya, Softimage, Lightwave, etc.) are all pretty much capable of doing the same things, and a lot of it comes down to personal taste, but I am also wondering what program people are finding are most called for out there in the post production world?

Basically, I figure I am good for learning one, maybe two 3D programs well enough to be able to work effectively and efficiently. 3D is not my main gig, and I don’t expect to ever become a master artisan in the 3D world, but I would like to be able to offer it to my clients on at least some level and enhance my skill set and gain personal satisfaction, as well. It’s always fun learning a new craft or art and taking on a new challenge.

So, considering all of that, what do you people think? What program will I be best served to delve into and why? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the respective programs in regards to effects and motion graphics? Knowing what you know now, and if you could only learn one program, maybe two, which one or two would those be and why?

I know this is a pretty broad topic and there is no one size fits all answer. Just thought I would get your feedback and thoughts on the matter.

    Thanks, in advance.

    Cheers,

    Trip

This question has been asked and answered a lot. It is likely why no one’s biting up to now. You can use the search engine to look for comments about Maya, Cinema 4D (which is the overwhelming favorite of the preponderance of AE users), etc.
