  • Would more memory speed up rendering and exporting?

    Hey guys

We’ve been putting more and more layers – so to speak – in our timeline and the rendering is taking up to 30+ minutes. Back in the old days it would take 5-10 minutes.

    Quick explanation.
We use livetype (.ipr) files for graphical elements to our promos, it has been a huge time saver when it comes to adding graphical elements – but the rendering have been greatly affected by it.
When we want to put the material on tape it takes over 30minutes to render 16 promos of 30seconds.

Would adding more memory make a difference? I would like to cut the rendering time in half.
So if adding 4GB only cuts 5minutes I would see it as pointless.

Also we use the compressor a lot. Would extra memory affect the compressor?

    The setup
    Mac Pro
    Processor 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 4GB (we have 6 Mac Pros, the are virtually the same)
    Mac OS 10.5.8

Nope. Adding memory doesn’t decrease rendering times. Only a computer with a faster CPU will decrease rendering times

Getting a RAID will enable vastly superior realtime performance that will allow you to render in your spare time rather than when your hardware dictates.

You might want to transition your graphics from Live Type to Motion. Live Type is discontinued and Motion can do pretty much everything it did…it’s more GPU accelerated and may render a bit faster too.

If you are working in a 10 bit timeline try switching your rendering from 10-bit to 8-bit, you’ll see a significant reduction in render time.
I just created a 10 second 4 layer sequence with a gaussian blur and a crop on each layer, the render time was 72 seconds on a 3.2GHz Octo-core with 8 GB of ram, the same sequence with 8bit rendering took 21 seconds.
I usually work in this mode until I get final approval on a project, then render it out in the 10-bit mode.
