  Advices on Analog > Digital conversion with GV ADVCMini

  HI everyone,

  I wasn’t sure where to post this question, but since I am digitalizing footage from Analog source (VHS and VHS-C) for editing in FCP, I have decided this part of the forum applied best. I have opted for the Green Valley ADVC Mini, because this is not a professional project and I wanted to give a try to this entry level “prosumer” (or so they say) product.

  I wanted to have some general advice and feedback on some notes I have regarding the footage obtained. I am using a Panasonic NV-FS200EG player for the tapes, connected through S-Video / Audio Composite to the card on one hand and through a SCART to a monitor (for playback) on the other. What I see on my monitor and what I get on my computer is quite different. I know lots of it will be because of the interlaced material, but I wanted to expose a few cases to ask you if I had to blame the condition of my tapes (quite old) or the Video card in these particular instances.

  I am putting some pictures of the final footage, the only solution I would have to present what I see on the monitor would be to take pictures of it, but that wouldn’t make much sense.

  Here are a couple of pics with comments. I can post bits of footage if it helps.

  
  This one shows the curvy aspect of the image I get as a result. I would add this is not stable, the picture has no straight vertical line and it “dances” or so. This does not show on my monitor during playback.

  
  The one I am mostly interested in this picture is the sort of white artifact on the top of the image. This one also gets curvy while playing the video. It clearly looks like something produced by a tired tape, but once again, it does not show up on my monitor (and yes I have checked, it is not off the monitor frame).
  
  This is a sort of sum-up of both, the curvy aspect (look at the fisheye effect on the left bottom corner), the white strip on the top.

  So: How much should be blamed on the interlaced / deinterlaced video? How much on the tape / how much on the “prosumer” ADVC Mini? This one is supposed to have a Y/C filter in the hardware…

  I guess comments on this could help the video community at large, as I am sure they can apply to many cases.
