1080p50?
Hi All,
I’ve just got a new panasonic HDC TM700, which has the option to shoot in 1080p 50, which I’m under the impression will be the highest quality, Is there a way of importing the footage to final cut pro 7 or is it just asking for trouble/ glitches etc?
help would be appreciated, a day of browsing forums yesterday left me a very muddled video artist. x

you can import it into fcp 7 using the log and transfer mode but 1080 p 50 means 50 HERTZ for pal. If you don’t need to work in a pal base use 1080p 30

You won’t be able to log and transfer 1080p50 into FCP. You’d have to use ClipWrap to do some codec jockeying.
Shoot 1080p25 to keep things easier, or if you want to shoot 50 for overcranking, just be prepared to do some processing first.

This camera shoots one format and outputs a different, you will need to have an additional hardware video card like a Kona in your computer to be able to allow FCP to understand 1080p50 or 1080p60 formats- these formats are traditionally used to create “offspeed” effects not available in your camera,
Chances are the files will import into your FCP as 1080i50 not 50p,this is due to an issue with the MFG’s native files not being FULLY compatible with FCP.

Hmm,thanks for getting back to me..
I tried log and transfer as 1080i50 and it doesn’t recognise the file. I’m not sure I understand the 50htz on Pal (and I am in the uk)is there a setting for this? my camera doesn’t appear to have the option of shooting in 1080p30 so so far it looks like clipwrap is the only option, is there a free alternative? -
Transcode to Prores and will work OK in FC.
This format makes no much sense unless, as has been pointed, you intend to slow down the picture.
Even in that case, IMO, would be better to shoot 720p50/60.

This camera records real 1080p60/50.
Other cameras. like the JVC’s, output progressive but really records interlaced.

the other recording modes are HA1920, HG1920, HX1920,and HE1920, will all of these be lower quality than 1080p50?

According to the interwebs, it does 50i too.

hmm yes, I investigated and it seems that the HA,HG,HX,HE’s picture size is 1920 x 1080/50i, and that the difference is not going to be massive on quality, I think that my best option for now will be to film in one of those. Thanks all for the help x

Yeah the camera shoots in either 50i or as the special option of 50p.
ClipWrap works well and rewraps the h.264 video in a Quicktime container. There is a ffmpeg script/app (Rewrap2M4V) floating around which does the same trick. ClipWrap however is a commercial product and therefore more capable. For instance, it can transcode directly into ProRes if you wish, which is an extra step in the Rewrap2M4V flow. If you go for the free workflow, you need to transcode into a workable format for FCP. Some use Toast, StreamClip etc. to accomplish that. Others use the VoltaicHD app, but I’m unsure if it can handle the 50p/60p versions, but I would bet it can.
