Outputing multiple languages simultaneously on DVD?
Oftentimes I edit speeches from conferences producce a DVD with various language translations. My final sequence usually has the original audio on one channel and 3 other language translations mixed on subsequent channels (2,3,4). On the DVD the viewer then selects the language they want to hear and all is well. Recently a convention center that does conferences in various languages asked me if it was possible to hear all 4 channels of the DVD seperately so they could route each one through their translation/headphone system. I immediately thought of surround sound but have never worked with it. I know it’s an unconventional use of the technology to say the least but is such a thing even possible? If so, how do you go about setting up such a project? I use DVD studio pro.

Can’t you just make separate DVD’s for each language? I’d push for that workflow. They need 4 players and you’re done.

You can probably encode a Dolby AC-3 file using the surround channels, like you said..but I don’t think the surround decoder on the playback sound system will handle it properly.
If you can’t use multiple DVD’s, you should think about another playback medium that can handle multiple channels simultaneously (tape, Quicktime, etc). DVD’s are not designed for this.

I realize it’s an unorthodox use of the DVD medium but since the audio is there as well as the picture I just thought I’d put it out there. Multiple DVD players would not start in sync. The conference center has been using Beta up to now synced with Tmc to an 8 track Fostex reel to reel audio player but these mediums are going towards extinction and a substitute is needed. Sometimes there are more than 4 tracks of audio that need to be heard simultaneously and synced to the picture. Ah the challenges of working in the media department of an international organization!

mmmmmm…. Have you looked into professional DVD players for the playback? Maybe they can be setup to play in sync…
Thinking out loud: multitrack audio playback might be easier to do from a computer playback of a QT movie with several tracks? You’d just need a Kona Card for SDI output of 8 tracks…

Also…your additional audio is translation…not lip sync..right? If all the DVD players are the same model, they would all fire from the same remote…they would probably be pretty close…within a few frames or so.

That’s a great idea! I wonder why I didn’t think of it.. they’re doing it in the trucks for roll already at sporting events. (using Ki Pro, not the mini, as it has remote control capabilities.
Might need it’s big brother (Ki Pro) but that’s better video too! Will play ProRes in it’s sleep with 8 tracks of audio embedded. You can decode those separately with a converter I’d think.

Hi Kim,
Make a surround DVD. Buy a DVD or BLU-Ray player with seperate (6) analoge audio outputs for the surround channels.

Thanks a million, John, Jerry and Ben! I can’t wait to try the different ideas. As a coincidence we are purchasing a KiPro this week (initially for other reasons). I like the idea of the better video quality since the conference center projects on a big screen (Hall holds 1,200 people). For smaller halls the DVD idea could be a cheaper way to go. So both ideas are very interesting. I’ll post back as soon as I have results to report. Thanks again to you all
