When I use FCP and do an audio drop in (insert) into a digibetacam tape I get a small glitch at the in point. I get this with our Blackmagic Multibridge, Aja IO and Matrox MXO2 systems.

I have been told this is a bug in FCP as
“it does not prerol the audio playback, and digital audio inserts need audio prior to the edit as the deck does an automatic ‘preread audio edit'”.
I was shown bug reports that were submitted with FCP 5 and FCP 6 but it is still there with FCP 7.

Does anyone have a workaround? Currently I have been told to do audio drop ins from the deck playing the audio in Nuendo locked to the decks timecode but it seems that is a total ‘retooling’ just to do a task FCP does well with video.

The technique of zero preroll for inserts started with AVID and it seems every NLE copied this. Without preroll, there is no audio for the edit to crossfade with.

This is not so much a bug as a perpetuation of a poor design principal. Don’t expect any NLE makers to “fix” this. If I have to do an insert, I make it picture only. All audio fixups are dropped in from the Fairlight.

All audio inserts I do I try to so with picture as well. And from cut to cut. I also have had audio insert issues with Avid…

i think i remember this issue years ago. it might be that….in the digibeta setup menu #317….if you have the data number set to 0 you will get an audio glitch. Sony says to set the data to 1 to get a crossfade.

[jerry wise] “Sony says to set the data to 1 to get a crossfade.”

Jerry, even with the setting to crossfade, you will get the audio glitch because there is no preroll, therefore there is no audio to crossfade with. All my digi beta and HDCam decks are correctly set to do crossfade inserts which is what I do all the time from the Fairlight and it works perfectly. FCP however will glitch because of the preroll issue.
