  • What external drive are you using with FCP?

Posted by Jordan Wilson on November 2, 2010 at 8:38 pm

My crappy old 1TB is about full and I’m looking to buy a better external. I’ve heard good things about G Raid drives but not sure which model is best for editing on FCP. So…. what’s the best drive? I’ll get reimbursed up to $250…. so that’s kinda the price range I’m eying.

I can always move old files over to another external… but wanted a good drive to edit on.

    Specs:
    iMac
    3.06 GHZ Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Ram
    Final Cut Studio 7
    Prores files from Canon 7D/60D/T2i

Single drives are not something I would recommend to edit video with. At least a two to four drive RAID is much better in terms of speed and performance.

But for $250, all you’re going to be able to get is whatever is in your price range. G-Tech is probably your best bet.

Caldigit AVDrive. They even included a free USB 3.0 card for my Mac Pro!

How do you like this drive? Are you using USB 3.0? And if so, how much faster is it than FW800?

Honestly, I don’t see much difference between USB 3.0 and FW800 speeds.

Well, it just so happens to be hooked up to my Mac Pro via the USB 3.0 board they sent me, let me run the BlackMagic drive speed utility:

    Disk read: 88.3MB/s
    Disk write: 86.5MB/s

The Caldigit site says “up to 145MB/s”. Somebody tell me what I’m doing wrong.

well ideally esata is the way to go. on mine usb 2.0 is actually faster than fw400.

Try a SATA board if you want that 145;)
