OOPS!!! I accidentilly used ND Filter!!
So here is my situation:
I was filming for about an hour trying to land a skateboarding trick. I finally landed it perfectly and the camera angle and everything was just perfect. I didn’t notice until I got home that the ND Filter switch was set to 2 and it was so bright out that I couldn’t tell in the viewfinder. Needless to say, I am not happy about this. Lets just assume that re-creating this footage at the correct exposure is out of the question. What should I do to brighten up the footage without it looking like garbage? I am already doing some time-remapping so it will be in AE; what filters/effects should I use to fix this footage? Thanks in advance for any advice!

i tried last night to clean up the footage with curves and levels but it looked blown out and crappy. I’ll try again and post my results so you can see what im talking about.

When you apply levels, you’ll see that some information on the right side of the histogram is missing. Try dragging the right marker to the left until it touches the right edge of the histogram.

I’d give a look at Shadow/Highlight, under Effect>Adjust in AE6.5, but probably elsewhere in a newer version. This is very powerful, and the same or very similar to the PhotoShop filter, and beyond me, but a search for the PhotoShop use of this will probably help.
Or, Curves.

I couldn’t find the Shadow/Highlight thing you were talking about, I have version 7. This is what I have so far (even worse quality since it is such a small file)…

Window>Effects & Presets (Ctrl 2), brings up the Effects & Presets palette, then type in “Highlight” or “Shadow”, scroll down and it should show you where it’s at.
Maybe it’s on in the Pro version?
You can always take it into Photoshop, especially nice in the new PhotoShop, but you can get footage in the old, by, Rendering to a Filmstrip (.flm I think) or an Image Sequence, do you Photoshop magic,batch processing Action of sequences, then re-imoport into AE.

Yikes is right on target…I’ve had good luck with the shadow/highlight filter in the past too, it just takes a while to find the right settings.
And nice trick by the way, (nollie shuv to manny?) I also liked the ramped slow-mo you used.~Colin

nollie shuv manny is right… good call! I learned how to do time remapping through this site also, lots of very knowledgable people on here. Do you know if AE7 has this shadow/highlight filter or is it just for 6.5? It seems like if they had a good filter in 6.5 they wouldn’t get rid of it in 7… right???
I tried typing in “shadow” in the effects and presets pallet but came up with nothing.
