Motion Blur for Particle
I can’t seem to figure out how to create a motion blur (or, it is better described as more like a streak) of a particle emitted using Trapcodes Particular.
While Particular has it’s own Motion Blur, this doesn’t seem to work for a Custom particle type nor does is it able to create a streak-like motion effect.
The effect I am trying to achieve was done by Pierre Miche. A Flash video example of this streak/blur effect is located at this site:

Near the top of the site page you will see “Watch The Video:” … click either… [High] [Low] and approximately 10 secs. into the video you will see the rain particles appear as the view breaks through the clouds. It is this rain drop blur/streak effect I am trying to achieve.
So far after many days of trial and error, I have not been able to create this streak like/blur rain effect. ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW, I tried adding Bullet Train Blur effect… that does not work because it appears that Particular will not allow this effect to be added to a Comp that has Particular (custom pariticle type) as an effect.

Hey, your best bet is creating a new adjustment layer, and applying the CC force motion blur. But if you have any layers under the particles, it will apply blur to them, you you should keep the particles in a precomp and use the adjustment layer cc force motion blur effect.

I have never had any problems getting Motion Blur to work through Particular, with any type of particle.
Here are possible issues that would result in little or no blur using the default Particular setting (Use Comp Settings):
Motion blur preview is off in the composition.
The layer with Particular applied does not have its Motion Blur switch on.
The composition’s shutter angle is too low.
The particle isn’t moving fast enough.
You should definitely be able to see noticeable blurring with a Shutter Angle of 270

However,… I found out something new…
You can NOT put an adjustment layer with cc force blur above a Trapcode Particular effect that has a custom particle…
…this will crash AE (the error message says it is a known issue)…
hmmm…. didn’t realize this until now… so, that rules out using cc force blur with the same comp as the Trapcode effect is being used.
So… I tried to add the force blur to the comp that has the picture of the particle… that will not work because the size of the precomp with the custom particle only fits the picture…. basically, there is nothing to streak except the picture itself… that does not create a streak behind the emitting object (i.e., particle picture).

The shutter angle and phase was the problem….
The Particle’s Motion Blur’s Shutter Angle and Phase was too low AND I needed to choose the subframe sample as type… plus, increase the subframe sample levels to make the particles to blend together. The velocity of the particle was good but without the subframe sample choosen and shutter angle cranked up the streak effect wouldn’t happen.
Now, I need to see if I can add a very slight glow to this streaking particle effect… hmm…something tells me that this will not be as easy as I expect.

Duplicate the Particular layer, add a Box Blur and change the blending mode to Add? =O
Or are you looking for a more specific effect…

The block Blur only seems to work on the particle being emitted…
I only want a small outside glow (I want the rain drop itself (i.e., the particular being emitted) to be relatively clear of any changes)… I am having more success by adding Shine to the comp that contains the rain drop picture/particular.
The particular effect I am looking for is the effect I referenced at the site mentioned in my first post (note: The falling rain effect I want is as the ground view first comes into view as the view changes from above the clouds and faces the ground)… although, I will be using it in a different fashion.
This streak-like and fast-rain falling effect created using Particular is a layer that has the effects simular to what is shown at the site above.
Base on the work so far, this seaminly simple rain effect will take many layers to make it work effectively.
