XDCAM EX 25P to PAL broadcast workflow
Hi,
Some XDCAM EX 25P material coming in, which needs to be put on DigiBeta in the end. What’s the general opinion?
Edit in the native format OK? (renders in ProRes?)
What to do in the end to get the best quality file to transfer to DigiBeta? It needs to be 4×3 anamorphicAny help appreciated

Edit native, output to a digibeta deck via a capture card. Don’t have one? Get one. Haven’t mastered for broadcast before? Hire someone to do it, who knows, and who has a capture card and access to a deck.

Sound advice if I didn’t do the Color roundtrip. I have a Decklink Extreme HD going to a Flanders Scientific monitor, but the downconvert of that card doesn’t look too exciting to me…

SD doesn’t look good on HD monitors. Even FSI. Get yourself an SD monitor to downconvert to, THEN make the quality judgement.

Thanks, Shane. I don’t have a SD monitor, maybe I should get one. The FSI can do a pixel for pixel show, but I guess that’s not the same.
I see in your profile you also edit for NatGeo. This show (25min) IS for NatGeo and I see they also accept a MXF-file. Experience with that? Would it be any better than DigiBeta? I know theoretically not, but it would mean they don’t have to ingest from tape and re-encode.

I thought it would be fine too, but it just wasn’t. I brought in my PVM-14L5 for viewing in SD. Much better.

Nope…only delivered tape. Both HDCAM SR and DIGIBETA.

Wait, they don’t want an HD master? Only SD? Sure about that? Check on that. WIth my last show we also, as I said, delivered an HDCAM SR tape.

It’s a one of charity thing for the Dutch channel. It will be aired a couple of times, but not on the HD channels I guess. I did the same thing a year ago, but I was unhappy about the way it looked on air. Looked OK on DigiBeta (material wasn’t great), but not so great when I caught it.

I went from Decklink to Kona3 to get a better downconvert. The Decklink is not as clean and sharp as the Kona. To get around the problem, I used to use the HDW 1800 HDCam to downconvert to digi beta at the same time as the playout to HDCam.
Now that I have the Kona3, I realise the HDCam’s downconvert is also really good and I sometime prefer it to the Kona, depending on the source material. If I am downconverting from HDV, the HDCam sometimes does the better job.
Everything that I have delivered to Nat Geo or Discovery was on HDCam @ 25, not digi beta.

HD to SD scaling with a AJA HDP2, watching on a HD monitor looks very very good. I couldn’t believe at first.
It’s much better than HD to SD scaling with a Kona card.
