Accidentally Shot 60FPS on the 7D
Posted by Dirk d. Lopez on October 5, 2010 at 4:49 pmWe started off shooting some nice scenery shots at 60FPS so we could slow it down to 30FPS in post for that nice slow-mo effect.
Unfortunately we made a mistake and forgot to change back the frame rate to shoot some talking interviews at 30FPS.
Is there anything I can do in MPEG Streamclip or FCP to “fix” the interviews? I really don’t want to reshoot it.
Thanks!

October 5, 2010 at 5:12 pmConvert it to 29.97 with Compressor. 60p to 30p converts nicely.

October 5, 2010 at 5:28 pmWhy not edit in a 60p timeline? When you’re done, upconvert the final to 1080i or down to 480i with full integrity of all your footage and frame rates.

October 5, 2010 at 6:53 pmThanks for the reply Rob and Bret, I totally forgot to mention an important part.
We had another 7D shooting angle 2 but it was set to 30FPS.
Is there anything I can do to work with both of these cameras so that neither appears slow mo?

October 5, 2010 at 7:12 pmI did a test by taking the 30FPS footage and in MpegStream Clip, before I transcoded it, I set it to 60FPS and it seems to look fine.
Will I have any problems with this workflow?
I guess the only bummer that I have to deal with is any motion in the foreground and background is very crisp because of the 60FPS so there isnt much motion blur like when shooting with 30FPS.
Live and learn I guess…

October 5, 2010 at 7:29 pmAlright, I did one more test and I think this is the way that I’ll do it.
During transcoding from the Compact Flash card I will have my Camera 1 60FPS footage from the 7D transcode to 30FPS.
Then Ill have my camera 2 30FPS footage transcode at the native frame rate of 30FPS.
Any problems with this work flow?
Thanks for the help!

October 5, 2010 at 7:52 pmI’m assuming you want to work in a 29.97 timeline, so go with the second workflow.
“Is there anything I can do to work with both of these cameras so that neither appears slow mo?”
Understand that 60p does not become slow mo until you make it slo mo in Cinema Tools. If you dropped 60p footage into a 29.97 timeline, you’re 60p footage would NOT become slow mo. FCP just skips every other frame of that clip.

October 6, 2010 at 2:48 amDon’t waist your time and don’t process the picture unnecessarily.
Edit your p60 footage in a p30 sequence.
No problem. I mix constantly p25 with p50 stuff.
