Rendering to Square Pixels Question
Posted by Dustin Milner on October 2, 2010 at 1:09 pmHey Guys,
I have a HDV PAL sequence 1440×1080 1.33 PAR that is destined to go to both SD DVD and the web.
What i’d like to do is effectively crop out the extra pixels outside the action safe area in my square pixel version to match what you would see on my DVD version.
Whats the best and easiest way to acomplish this?Dustin Milner replied 15 years, 11 months ago 2 Members · 4 Replies -

October 3, 2010 at 1:38 amI guess you want a 4×3 DVD.
Drop your movie in a sequence with the specs of your delivery format (DVD and web).

October 3, 2010 at 3:21 amHey Rafael thanks for your reply,
Thats what i normally do, in this instance im going to a SD 16×9 DVD.
So when i render out a web version ill do a 1024×576 square pixel version.
My question though is when i make the square pixel comp, that resolution is based on the entire captured image, is there an effective way to crop out the extra footage that’s beyond my action safe region that would not be seen on a DVD version.
Basically, the idea being to match the viewing experience between the two.
I know its some what a strange question as not many clients would really care, but the thought had occurred to me the other day and wanted to get someone elses thoughts on it.
Thanks again,

Yes, I understand what you means.
The problem is that your original HDV footage isn’t made of Squared, but of HD pixels.
Is not just cropping but rebuilding the whole picture what is needed.
1024 x 576 HD pixels doesn’t make a 16×9 frame.

October 3, 2010 at 5:51 amAhh ok i see, so in other words a waste of time to worry about?
you cant really accurately crop to an action area in square pixels?
So if i render out a 16×9 square pixel frame size (1024×576) out of compressor from my original 16×9 non square pixel footage, even though its a 16×9 frame size its only 16×9 in relation to D1 Pal SD? In other words it might look right but i have actually distorted the image slightly?
If so, in order to maintain proper aspect when rendering a square pixel version of my HDV anamorphic material i should go to what frame size?
Sorry to get slightly off topic just want to make sure my typical workflow is the right one.
