AE FCP workflow on long form documentary
I need some suggestions as to my AE/FCP workflow for a 90 minute documentary with lots of “affects” work on photos and video.
I am working on a 90 minute documentary. The story is told mostly by interviews. All the current day footage and interviews are shot at 720p30. Most of the visuals for the film come from archive video (ESPN, home video, etc) that is all standard def 4:3 and from scanned photos and magazines.
Of the 90 minutes of program time, approximately 40 minutes are archive video or photos.
The plan is to “treat” all the photos and video with effects, movement, etc. I prefer to use AE because it’s less cumbersome than FCP and in many cases can do things FC can’t do at all.
If this was a 5 minute program, I’d export OUT of FCP the audio and video, minus the b-roll footage and photos. I’d then bring this file into AE as the base layer, and then add all my photos and video and effects and whatnot. AE would be my final mastering program and I’d export the master from AE.
But on a 90 minute program, that may not be the best way. Would I be better off going in the opposite direction (AE to FCP)? Would I be better off having a hundred files that I export OUT of AE (each mini sequence of treated photos/video) and try to manage them all?
Not that this makes a big difference, but I’m using FC 7 and AE 7 on a MBP with 3GB RAM.

Lay out all your photos to the correct timing in FCP. Send the entire timeline to AE with your layers intact. Do your effects, and render out, send back to FCP.

Well, it’s totally up to you. When I have to do things like this (especially with still photos), i usually use FCP as the editor, meaning I make my shot selection and get the timing pretty much down with super rough moves, and then I autoduck to AE to fine tune and add any necessary effects.
As far as the video, I’d conform that to whatever you need it to be which sounds like 720p29.97. You can choose to do that now before the edit, or wait until your final list is complete after editing and conform only what you use.
