    Hello fellow techies –

    I’m doing a television show at 23.98fps. Final output is HDCAM-SR at 29.97 drop-frame.

My question is simple and it’s something I’ve had trouble getting a concrete answer on:
Why does the broadcaster insist on a 29.97 DF master, even if the source material is 23.98? I know they ultimately broadcast at 29.97 (duh), but I always wondered why they wouldn’t want a progressive master — especially if they ever plan to rebroadcast in Europe, etc.

I would love to hear about any American broadcasters who are accepting HDCAM SR at 23.98 (if any exist).

Yes, some do. But MOST do NOT. Every network has different delivery requirements… often based on different genres of programming.

Bottom line, if they’re paying… you give ’em whatever they want. In most cases (for US networks), that’s a 1080i 59.94 (Interlaced) HDCAM or HDCAMsr master.

It is kinda dumb, as all they have to do is add the pulldown on their HDCAM-SR deck…but since they are paying, you gotta give them what they ask for.

This is true only with the $12K option card for format conversion. Without that option card installed, you can’t add pulldown – you can only view a 23.98 tape as 23.98.

If you or anyone else is interested in how this panned out:

After some discussion with the broadcaster and their studio (same company) they asked for both, a 23.976 HDCAMSR for archiving AND a 29.97 HDCAMSR master for broadcast. haha … the post house is probably cursing me for “enlightening” the broadcaster.
