Long render times ProRes 1080p footage
Just shot 40 mins of mixed footage from my HMC40 and 7D. All footage was thrown onto a ProRes422 timeline after transcoding (1080p 1920×1080 @ 24fps). Most of the footage was shot with the HMC40 with some handheld stuff added via the 7D on a second video track. I did some color correction on the footage.
Come time to render I’m looking at 4 hours!! – does this seem reasonable. I’m running a MBP 2.6 C2D with 6 gigs of RAM so perhaps this is normal for this type of machine.

Why are you rendering? What effects have you applied that is causing this render? What specific color correction? 3-way? Magic Bullet? And know that the MacBook Pro is a lot slower when it comes to rendering than a tower would be. I have both, so I can attest to that.

I am rendering (final step of my edit) then will save the entire sequence as a Proress file then I’ll throw it into Compresssor. The color correction is just for FCP, 3-way I believe. I realize my little MBP is not the ideal tool for the job but it’s all I have right now. This is my first edit of 1080 footage and I choose 1080 as both cameras can do 1080 24p. It might of been better to shoot in 720p 30 but 7D doesn’t do that natively.

With a firewire drive as storage too. That might slow things down as well.

Yes I’m using a FW800 OWC enclosure but it’s housing a portable 600gig drive 5400rpm I think. I’ve used this to edit before and not had any problem but then again I’ve not used/edited 1080 footage before. I normally use a FW800 enclosure with a desktop 7200rpm drive.

5400? Dude, that’s a SLOW drive. Not recommended for 1080 HD work that’s for sure.

Ok but the footage played back fine in the timeline. I’ll confirm this by using my big 7200 drive but I’m sure you’re correct!

Ok just copied over all 90gigs of files to my other drive, opened up the same project and now she’s saying 34 mins – the other drive said 4 hours and I actually left it running over night from 12am to 10am this morning and it sill wan’t done!!
That’ll teach me to use my silly little portable drive and at least next time I’ll know that I can really edit 1080p on this machine!

So I jumped the gun when I said it was going to render in 32 mins but I’m almost on 2 hours and it’s at 71% so still quite long. I’m assuming it’s the color correction I applied to all 40 mins of the footage from the HMC40 and the 7D footage. That’ll teach me ….
I’ll post the final render time for those that haven’t fallen asleep while following this wonderfully exciting post!
