Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Do I need SAS?

I’m working in compressed HD (XDCAM HD)…

I occasionally have stuttery playback off my media drive. – I’m using 3 internal drives striped in RAID0. I get about 313write and 270read (MB/s).

The issue comes up with a 1920×1080 29.97p Sequence…mostly when I place a PNG with alpha over the video. I have to render…and it doesn’t always play back smoothly.

Not sure if moving to a SAS solution would resolve my problem?

Ummm. You did not give any specs on your computer.

My guess is not drive speed which is pretty high – certainly enough for Uncompressed HD. XDCam is not going to be any trouble with read speeds like yours. The issue may be more to do with processor having to deal with a GOP format codec, although your machine specs seem fine.

Unless your drives are full, I can’t see it is a drive issue.

    Jason,
Most people that edit XDCAM, render Prores.
Whit your system you shouldn’t have any problem with that footage.
XDCAM works in any MBP with FW.
What about a bit system cleaning?

Are you referring to something like Disk Warrior? I’m waiting for my IT guy to run it…

Do you have your Render folder in the System HD?
(Well, with your computer, even this way should play smooth).

No…render folder is in FCP docs…on the root of my media drive (RAID0 – 3 internal 7200rpm SATA drives)

I was curious what others are using for graphics with alpha, is PNG appropriate?

[Jason Brown] “I was curious what others are using for graphics with alpha, is PNG appropriate?”

I always use PNG+ for graphics unless it’s practical to create a ProRes 4444+ video to use as the graphic (e.g. a lower third with some kind of animation in and out).

As far as I know most people do the same.

Regarding your stuttering playback, are you rendering as XDCAM or ProRes?

I had recently re-installed my machine…and had rendering set as “same as sequence codec”

I just changed it to ProRes.

    Forgot about that.
