Batch capture problems
Can anyone shed any light on a batch capture problem that’s driving me insane?
I’m having problems batch capturing to an external drive. Every time I try to batch capture, the deck winds the tape to the in point, starts playing for about a millisecond and then stops and I get a “Dropped frames in this clip” error message.Using Capture Now works fine to the external drive. Batch capture to my internal hard drive works fine.
I’ve tried 2 different external hard drives and I’ve tried connecting with eSATA, FW and USB – all cause problems – although USB sometimes worked.
I’m using FCP 7, Snow Leopard, MacBook Pro, Western Digital MyBook Studio 2, Canon XM2 (or GL2 in US) – I’ve also tried with another Canon camera and got the same problem. I’m using Firewire PAL Basic in the capture settings.
Are there any known issues with this configuration? Or any FCP prefs I could tweak to get this working?

Do you have both the camera and hard drive connected to the FireWire port? Even though Macs have multiple FW ports, they have only one controller. While you usually can connect a couple of drives via FW without problems, when you connect the camera and a drive to FW you may have a problem.

When I tried with firewire, I had the hard drive plugged into the mac’s firewire port and the camera connected to the hard drive’s second firewire port. I found some info on the internet about problems with this kind of setup. But when I connected the external drive by eSata (through an expresscard interface on the macbook pro) or USB, I still got problems

Have you trashed prefs and repaired permissions?

I’ve tried trashing prefs. How do I repair permissions?

I eventually solved this problem. It turns out that it was the Western Digital MyBook hard drive that was causing the issue by taking too long to spin up during capture. I’ve since tried 2 different makes of external hard drive and they don’t give me any problems.
