Thanks In advance for your help. Im Currently working in a Faculty with 15 macpro’s all have the same specs.

    OS-10.6.4
    Final Cut Studio 3-FCP-7.0.2
    2.66GHZ Quad cord Xeon
    6 Gigs of Ram
    Nvidia Geforce GT 120
    All have Fibre channel Cards

We work offline, everything is in photo jpeg compression. Some of the issues we have encountered are kinda strange and frustrating and it has been hard on our workflows. First when doing any speed changes on a clip they clip does not play in the timeline you can scrub through and see the changes but will not play back, if it does playback it sometimes plays the wrong clip back. Also when doing cross dissolves to clips sometimes it will start the transition before it gets to the transition, and agin if you scrub through you can see that its ok. The work arounds have been to trash preferences and even reconnect the media in the timeline that is already online. and even restart the machine. Also When rendering on one of the problems when we have to render we get a error saying the render file folder is locked and can not be rendered, even when the the location of the scratch disks are changed. The Work around for that is to render clips individually I narrowed down these problems down to 3 machines with two different projects. Do you think this problems are coming up because of

A.Software maybe there should be a reinstall?
    B. The photo jpeg compression
C.A Corrupt file? In a project or on the server?

Sorry this so much stuff at one time. Anyone have any of the same problems or maybe a solution. Its driving me mad so frustrating. Thanks

Photo JPEG is not a realtime codec supported by FCP. It’s as simple as that.

Thanks for responding David. That was my first thought to. but We have cut another show using the same codec and even doing everything the same way. Thats why I dont understand

Is it possible that show used OfflineRT? That Easy Setup uses the PhotoJPEG codec and has RT support, but it is NOT full frame (320 x 240 in NTSC).

Full frame PhotoJPEG does not have RT support and never has.

No Everything is the same. Have some new news. Another fix we have found to work is to close the sequence up and reopen, everything goes back to normal. Maybe just a a bug?

I don’t think it’s an FCP 7 bug or it would be talked about all day here.

Are you using shared storage ?

I used to see lots of bizarre behavior due to permissions issues on a Fascilis Terrablock network i freelanced on.
They eventually got all the kinks worked out with Fascilis tech support.

i’d have to go with the Photo Jpeg codec causing the problem too. I’m quite curious to know what made you choose that codec. You have modern machines running modern software but chose a very dated codec.

If you’re worried about drive space I would go with ProRes Proxy or even just DV PAL – both are RT supported codecs.

You will often find that some ‘non’-supported features might work for years and then for almost no reason they might stop working. Like people might edit using USB drives or h.264 codecs with no problems… but as neither of these are supported practices you might find one day they create problems.

To John yes there is a San Storage system, it had some issues before, but has been working like a rock star for awhile now. I have know idea who made the decision to use that codec, but obviously it was made to save drive space. There was talk of using Prorez Proxy. Do you know The specs of the codec? Thanks Gary that is a great reply

I have not worked with ProRes Proxy, but it appears to be essentially the same as ProRes 422, but at a lower bit rate.

Another render problem has come up. And of course im thinking its the phtoto jpeg codec. An Issue came up this morning with a project that was started on one computer and opened on another. All render files where found however when playing back clips in the timeline it was showing the wrong media and starting transitions in the wrong spot. With my previous problem same sort of issues. is this some what related? Could it be possible. Since both projects originally where started in that room some how things are corrupt? Project file, Or corrupting the media? Any thoughts
