  .SST Subtitles in FCP

  I have a client who wants to deliver me a .SST file for use as subtitles. I have been looking around and it seems that I’ll either need a plug-in for FCP or external software to convert the .SST file to an XML. Does anyone have experience with these types of files and can recommend the best software or plug-in to use?

  Is it text or bitmap SST?

  I don’t yet have an example. I am told I will receive: The QuickTime file as 8bit uncompressed SD, and the subtitle file is an .SST with matching bitmaps.

  I have never had to use these files as we have a caption system in our machine room that usually takes care of these subtitles as an open/closed caption file.

  Lovely.
  Then it’s a 4 colored bitmap.
  Meaning, one color transparant, one color title, one color outline, one color anti-alias.

  This is for DVD, not for video. Quality will suck.

  If the guy who supplied it can do this, he can also crank out another format.

  Check out Subbits (it’s on my site)
  It eats a variety of formats, and spits out either text based XML (to drive a text generator) or bitmap based XML (to connect to rendered PNG files, 24 bit with alpha. The render engine that comes with Subbits creates those.)

  If it’s a one-off, contact me if you got a ‘normal’ file, and we’ll work something out.

  Thanks Bouke,

  I have been going at this for the past few hours with SubBits but have not quite figure it out. Mainly, I get a pinwheel and end up force quitting. I bring in the video reference and then inport the subtitle file which I have both brought in as .sst and .srt and have not had much luck.

  Am I doing something incorrectly?

  Are you importing bitmap based files?
  That won’t work…

  Do mail me what you have, and i’ll have a look.
