Migration to new MAc Pro
Posted by Marshall Thompson on August 28, 2010 at 7:27 pmHi, in Sept. I’ll be moving from my 2005 G-5, dual 2.5 to a 2010 Mac Pro 8-core. At the same time I’ll be updating FCPS2 to newest version. What is your recommendation for a safe migration path?

August 28, 2010 at 7:31 pmDon’t migrate. Start from scratch and reinstall everything.

August 28, 2010 at 9:02 pmYou cant really migrate anyway, even if you wanted to.
Your new computer will be running Snow Leopard, which your G5 isn’t running.
You cant really just clone the drive either, as everything installed on your old computer was optimized and configured for a PowerPC G5 system. Even though the apps might be Universal, the other components and drivers may have some differences.
Just install FCS3 from scratch on the MacPro. You will be asked for your FCS 2 serial..thats it. Install all your apps from scratch on the new system.
(Honestly…on a new system, I always wipe the drive and re-install the operating system myself…not trusting the pre-install…but that might just be paranoia)

August 29, 2010 at 12:10 amTake it 1 step at a time. Install OS and run software update. Repair permissions. Install pro apps. Run software update and repair permissions. Check the site of every app you will install to see compatibility with snow leopard. Same with any drivers for devices being connected to computer. You can then copy over documents from your old system into the new documents folder. holding T key during start up on G5 will- Start up in FireWire Target Disk mode (very handy for plugging your Mac into another as an external hard drive). Do a search for how to transfer the data file of your mail program into the new mail program. There’s always some down time doing all this but you’ll end up with a clean well running system. In the meantime you can still get stuff done on your old one.
