Exporting Time
HELP! I am an experienced FCP user (5 years) and have edited & exported at least 50 jobs under 10 minutes for clients. My equipment is:Power Mac G5, 2X 500g Hard drive. 1.5TB USB external HD, 4g ram, Mac OSX 10.5.8, FCP 6.0.6. I am now at a seemingly standstill on a very important and LATE, 2 hour feature.
The job has been rendered. I am attempting to export with QT conversion; H264, Quality best, Frame rate 24, frame reordering: Yeas, multi-pass encoding, 720X480 16:9
Audio; Big Endian, 48,000 kHz, 16 bit, stereo.
It has been converting for 11 hours and shows an estimated time of 2 days, it is 14% complete.
This is a big chance for me to move up in my business. I’ve read quite a few posts but am not sure what relates to this job with my configuration of hardware, software and settings.Please I need a patient hand. Is there a way to convert quicker, for broadcast quality DVD than this?

You’re correct about “desire the best possible looking authored DVD” Also correct about being able to play in any DVD player, it would be really good if it could play on a Mac & a PC.
I usually use Toast to author to DVD. It’s always been good to me. What do you think?Some questions:
1- Any special Codec? Or just “current settings”?
2- Where will I find the 2 hour pre-set? & if my project is longer than 2 hours will it matter?
3- Afterwards can I author with Toast? Or do you recommend DVD studio Pro?Thanx again,

Yes, I’ve always done export to QT conversion, then to Toast with great results, but the sheer numbers of hours (two plus days) to convert to QT is a killer. are you suggesting I just make a stand alone QT movie(not a conversion)? Will that work to then Author??
This is great help and I will spend time learning Compressor, I just need to get this job out with high quality.

And making it self-contained will only take longer. Uncheck that box and it will speed up. It will only be a reference file but will work with compressor.

Now I’m totally confused. I don’t really understand what “self contained ” means. and what if I don’t use compressor, I just go to “TOAST” and author a DVD? Is the quality going to suffer?
Please I need to understand more than I do.

Sorry! I had a feeling that would confuse you. When you check “self-contained” the resulting file is quite large but contains all information needed to play back on any system. It’s “complete”.
When you uncheck that box, it creates a reference movie. Much smaller in size and exports much faster. It also creates “pointer” files which you don’t see but that references the media. These files get dumped into your render files (usually in the same folder as your capture scratch).
Anyways, the reference file will work fine to make your your files for your dvd. I personally don’t use toast but compressor instead.
I only brought it up because you said it was taking way too long to export.
So, export out of FCP, current settings. (Self-contained or not, doesn’t really matter). Dump that file into compressor with the 120 minute “best” preset and you’re done.
You might want to do a search on the DVD studio pro forum for MANY similar posts.

I skipped compressor and went direct to Toast. I need to watch it now and see if it’s OK.

You’ve been a great help and I’ve already been able to toast a DVD. Now I need to force myself to carefully watch two hours of what I’ve been looking at for 9 weeks and convince I’m still interested. I know if I don’t I’ll be shocked when hearing about a terrible mistake I could’ve caught.I’ll let you know if I live through the stress.
