Exporting HD 720/24pn in FCP
I’m struggling here. None of the tutorials online seem to help. So I came here, to the pros.
I’ve shot a nice little piece that is nearly 3 minutes in length. I shot using the HPX-170 at it’s 720/24pn recording mode, edited in FCP and have been trying my damndest to export to QuickTime in HD, but I’m obviously having issues. Can someone please help?

Set in and out points, File menu > Export > QuickTime Movie-Current Settings(not QT Conversion). Check Make Movie Self-Contained. That will make a file you can then use in Compressor (or other encoding Program) to make files for DVD, web, etc.

Hmm…Okay. Thanks John, but isn’t there a way to do it through Quick time? Just curious.

The result is a Quicktime mov using the edit codec in your sequence. You can then use that file (in essence it’s your master) to make a file you can upload to YouTube, etc.

What exactly are you trying to do? Where does the file need to go once it leaves your machine?

How can you export your edited sequence, that exists only in FCP, by using Quicktime? John’s method is the way to GET a lossless, self contained, full quality version of your cut.
But now…what do you want to do with it? Saying that you want to export to “HD” is like saying “I want to buy a car.” What KIND of car? What KIND of HD?

Sorry fellas. I was out of the video game for a couple years and now everything is HD, so I’m a tad out of the loop. Thanks for your patience.
I would like to export an HD video for the web: YouTube and my website.

Use Compressor and make an h264 that matches youtube’s specs.

That’s impossible as DVD is SD.
For both, you will export a movie that has been outlines in previous posts, then take that movie in to compressor and make an hd h264, then an sd mpeg2 with audio for dvd. You can use the same exported movie to make all of the transcoded files.

Quick question though. Do I export straight from FCP to Compressor or from a Quicktime file? I guess the problem is my 720/24pn footage when I export to QT seems incredibly low res.

As I said, export as has been outlined in the previous posts, then bring that movie in to Compressor.

It’s not any different if you are doing it correctly, it is a digital copy (not transcode) of your FCP timeline. Do you have the high quality option check in your QT prefs? It’s best to look at this stuff on a broadcast monitor.
