Problem with scanned images
Hi there,
I’ve scanned in some old photographs into my computer at 300dpi, when importing to final cut pro 6 to zoom in or pan and scan, the quality in the viewer window is fine, however, when put into the timeline/canvas, the image quality reduces significantly. I’ve tried higher quality scans, different formats, nothing seems to work! It exports the problem too.
Another problem is trying to get the variable speed zooms and pans, the easing in or out like a real camera as opposed to one constant speed on images. How is this achieved because the constant/variable speed option is always disabled on jpegs.
A deadline looms! Any help is much appreciated, thanx

Dpi doesn’t matter in video, only raster size.
What codec is your timeline?
As far as the ease effects, FCP is terrible at them. Perhaps you should look in to a photo plug in that will help with the kind of motion control you need.

Thanks Jeremy, not sure about the the codec, but I’ve just learned to do it all in motion and export that into FCP and it seems to have corrected the problem. Happy days!

300 dpi is print quality. Don’t need to be any higher then 72 dpi for tv and web and screen.

unless you want the option to zoom into the image, then 72dpi soon falls apart…

Ahhhh! I knew it was all to good to be true!
Adam you were right, 72dpi does fall apart on zooming in. The problem now is when I export a 300dpi image from FCP after applying the zooms on motion, they export at around 500mb! When I cracked it the first time, they where only 25mb mov files!
Does anybody know why this is? Cheers.

why are exporting files at 300dpi from FCP? – its a video editing package, not a photo editing one.

Images are scanned in at 300dpi. Dropped into FCP, the image deteriorates when zoomed in to, so I’ve used motion to correct the problem. At 72dpi, not even motion can keep the quality. If you know any other way or why FCP doesn’t maintain quality on images, or how to correct it without needing to use motion – fantastic! Why the stills export at 500mb is beyond me!

Again, it’s not DPI but frame size.
If you scan the images at 2000 by 2000 pixels, you’ll be able to scale.
