I have a project on external hard drive, took it to another machine, opened it and everything looked fine (no offline files, etc).

I have some generated outline text (subtitles) that appear fine in the canvas window when playing the video, but if I double-click them to open the controls, there are no words in the text box and I cannot click into it.

Also, if I move the text in the sequence at all (left, right, to a different track) the text disappears entirely (the generated text clip is still in the sequence, there is just no text in it).

When I bring the project back to the original machine, everything works fine again.

Wondering if maybe there is a file that stores the information for generated text that didn’t make it onto the external hard drive? Or if there is a FCP user setting that might help this?

not sure but I had a similar problem with the “typing text” tool.
in fcp 6 it types out perfectly, when opened in fcp 7 its all smashed
together and types faster. I had to upgrade the other machine to 7 to
match so I just exported the clip and baked it in.

what text tool are you using? I have found all of them to be
    buggy except boris title 3d.

I have the same problem except only with the font Calibri. Would be great if someone has a solution. Its quite annoying.
