I’m a long time Avid, Smoke, and Linear editor (google linear video editing) who will be taking the test shortly for level one certification on FCP 7.

I’m doing this as I will be involved in selling and supporting this gear and the VAR is required to have some certified people available to them. I have owned a FCP setup for about a year now.

So my question is about what to expect in the test. Just trying to get an idea what it’s like, about how long, any insight etc… Am currently going through Diana Weynand’s book with the footage.

    Thanks

Memorize all the key commands you can. I haven’t taken the test yet, but from what I’ve heard from others, that’s a large part of it.

Take the practice exam (if they still offer it)

Know the three ways (or so) of doing something such as opening a project, making the viewer active, etc. The book is an excellent prep. The test is easier than actually remembering how to do something. There are either multiple choices or a picture where you choose the right keys or button to press. You should know the names of all things in the interface. Search on-line for practice tests. I forget how long it was but time was not an issue. Use the chapter reviews/quiz at the end of each chapter.

    Thanks everyone.
You know it’s kinda crazy, all these little interface areas we click on, push or slide seem to have “names”. Perhaps after using my system for a year I should learn them.
Speeding through the book now and testing next week.

The level one user exam lasts 90 minutes and is made of roughly 60 questions. Multiple choice. Sometimes multiple answers. Some is based on screen pics with before and after situations where you are to decide what happened, what function was used etc. Some are screen pics where you have to locate the command used to achieve the result depicted.
There are questions about shortcuts but not many.

If you read and practice Diana’s book thoroughly and understand its teachings you should pass. If you don’t, you can pass the test again after 7 days, for a fee.
