  • Illustrator CS3 layered file will not import to AFX7 as a comp

Posted by Toby Heslop on September 12, 2007 at 11:02 am

I have layered a logo in Illustrator CS3 and am trying to import it as a comp into AFX7 but it only shows up as 1 layer in a folder and a comp,

i don’t understand why it is not working,

    am on a mac too!

    – I did get it working by saving the illustrator file as an AI file but in the CS2 legacy format????

what is wrong with CS3, does it not work with anything but AFXCS3 aswell.

Exactly. You answered your own question!

Looks like it is time to upgrade.

You might have to move all your layers in AI into *layers*, out of that sub-layer thing it does.

I think you can use the “release to layers” command in AI, but to make sure, you might want to search the AE COW for “illustrator” and “layers”.

actualy the release to layers function will put all the vectors (or vector groups) on new layers, but the layers will be within a ‘parent’ layer… but it’s done this for a while, at least since cs2, so i would think saving it as a cs2 ai file wouldn’t remedy this.

but, if you didn’t pull the separated layers out of the parent (if you used the release to layers method), i would give that a try, and delete the empty ‘parent’ layer. you might also try saving without pdf compatibility.

i haven’t done this since upgrading to cs3, so there may be a new step or workaround…

yes, I think this is what was causing the problem, I use release to layers.

so i created my own layers andmoved them in and now it seems to work!

Thanks to all you dairy farmers that replyed,

    big ups!

you don’t have to do it by hand (dragging paths to new layers)… once you release to layers, in the lyaers palette, you will see a top layer, with several other layers ‘nested’ under it. jsut select all those layers and pull them above the ‘parent’ layer. the parent will now be empty, just throw it out, but all you ther layers will be separate now.

also, keep the pdf compatible option on… i just tried this technique the other day, and tested it with pdf on and off…. it seems the that ae needs the pdf option to maintain layers in an imported comp.
