FCP Workflow – Multiple Formats to Film Print
Hello there. I was just brought on to edit a short 4 minute film that was shot on multiple formats (about 4 hours total). In the end, the main output will be as a film print. I don’t have much experience going back to film, so it would be awesome If I could get some opinions on workflows.
The formats that it was shot on are as follows:
– 16mm film to SD(720×486) Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 QuickTimes @ 29.97 with timecode and keycode burned in– Canon 5D h.264 @ 1080p 23.98
– Other HD h.264 QuickTimes @ 1080p 29.97
The good news is that there is no sound. All the footage will be cut to an already finished sound piece (somewhat like a music video).
But here are my questions:
Since this is going to be a film print, do I need to take the 16mm SD Uncompressed 29.97 QTs and telecine them to 24fps? If so what is the best route to do that?
Since I’m working with 5D footage and other h.264 based footage, should I just transcode everything to ProRes (including the Uncompressed SD (16mm))?
Should I be working in a HD timeline or SD timeline? And at which frame rate? I’m assuming HD @ 24, but not sure…
Sorry for the bombardment of questions, but I’m a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out the workflow for this project. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am editing on a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM
