I have just completed my first Bluray title and what an adventure. As such, all my completed footage is in 1080p 23.976 Pro-Res Quicktimes. From these files, I would also like to make an SD DVD using DVD Studio Pro. If someone has a good workflow or could point me to a good post on COW, much appreciated. Below are some assumptions, questions and further issues I am dealing with:

    1. Although all the material I am dealing with is 1080P, 23.976, Apple ProREs HQ, its all pillar boxed, meaning its 4×3 with black bars on the sides.

    2. Pulldown: I am a little confused about DVD players. I THINK not all DVD players can players can playback progressive material – only newer players can do so. As this DVD I am making is for commercial use, I need it to be able to play in older players as well. So where and how do I deal with pulldown.

    Thanks
    Doug

    Hi Doug,

I just had a similar job with my 16:9 shot Sony EX1 Shot HD Film.
After I did several tests – I can say, you can go directly from an AppleProRes Timeline HD into Compressor and make and SD of it. Just watch out for some things – take the Best Quality Preset anmd adjust it:

    1. Try to go for CBR not Two Pass VBR – around 7,2 or 7,4 Mbps
    2. Switch on the Frame Controls and Set the Resize Filter to “Best” – this way it looks still best possible when downsizing from HD to SD
    3. In the sound set the Dialog Normalisation to -31dBFS and set the “Compression Preset” under “Preprocessing” to “None”
