If I import a file (no alpha just full frame on black)that has 2 text graphics, one is white and the other is PAL legal red… when it’s in FCP the red graphic has massive amounts of stepping as if it has no aliasing. If I follow the exact same procedure except make the red graphic white … the stepping on that graphic is not there. I have the same results internally in FCP using internal text tools, in fact if you have 2 lines of text, lets say (circular text to highlight issue) “SOP” in white and “SOP” in red… the red type looks steppy… if you add a 3 way CC and pull out the chroma you can see the edging improve before your eyes.
Is there something strange happening in FCP with chroma? By the way the chroma stepping appears on all types of monitors/tech monitors. You do something in photoshop and it looks great…export a still to FCP and the hi (legal) chroma components look awful. I work in PAL SD 4×3 and 16×9. I have tried all sorts of pixel aspects and sequence sizes and monitoring modes. I understand the normal processes of monitors trying to produce a curve etc, but I feel this chroma stepping is unacceptable. Is there something I’m doing wrong.
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers

Are you working with a DV codec, if so that can be it. I’m in NTSCland and DV hates red, anything solid will block up big time.

Also are you viewing this on an external monitor?

    Hi Michael,
No working in 10 bit pro res HQ and as stated previously have tried all types of monitors. It shows up on my mac internal monitors and my external tech monitors, interlaced and non interlaced etc.
    Cheers
