Beachballing During Playback
I am currently editing on a client’s machine right now running Final Cut Pro 7 and I’m experiencing random freezes while editing. It usually happens when I’m just playing back video on the timeline. No rhyme or reason that I can see so far, but it happens about 20-30 times a day and is really annoying. Once every 10 times it crashes after beachballing, but most of the time it just beachballs for about 30 seconds and then plays back fine without problems.
I’ve never had this issue before on this computer, so it’s odd that it just started now.
Here are some specs
Octo 2.8 Mac Pro
Internal 4TB SATA raid
Codec is XDCAM EX 1080i50
Final Cut Pro 7
4 gigs of RAM
playback using Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 2 through HDMI monitor -

How large is the project file? That’s actually the bottom end of RAM that works OK BTW. Sounds like it’s disk caching, and sometimes crashing to me.

This is on several project files ranging from 4megs to 12megs.
I never had this problem using the computer before with the same amount of RAM which is why it’s odd that things are happening now.
Is there something I could adjust in the Memory & Cache prefs that might help?

If you have a lot of stills in the sequence you can set a larger bit of RAM for that. You’ll find this in the System settings…
Might just try trashing your preferences for FCP too.
