    Hello to all,

I am new at AE, but am very excited about my first composition. The client wants their spot to end with their logo being shattered like glass. Great Idea!

The Creative Director wants the pieces of glass to be large pieces, so I set the Repititions to 2.0. But also, in his sketch, he wants lots of little pieces of glass to as well.

How do I do that? Large chuncks of glass, with many small sharp pieces of glass.

Thanks for your help and I am looking forward to the responses.

    Have a great day!

Use two instances of Shatter. For this to work, you’ll need different settings for each. Other than setting different values for Repetition to adjust particle size, you’ll want one copy set to render just pieces, and since you’ve set up the big pieces, this copy should be set to render to smaller pieces.

Importantly, for this duplicate, set the Render parameter to Pieces. Other parameters to look out for would be Gravity and other settings that affect the velocity of the smaller pieces.

    Roland,

Thank you for your help. I just tried adding a second shatter effect and set the render to pieces. Only now, the logo breaks into many little pieces that make up the big pieces. Not sure if that makes since. The larger chunks of glass are now broken up into little pieces.

This is not what I need. I am trying to get the big chunks of glass in tact, then with a good amount of smaller pieces to add to it.

Is there an order that this effects need to go in. I’m sure I am just not doing something simple. Also, when I set the repitition for the small pieces effect, there are too many pieces of glass. The size is what I need, but not the quantity.

    Thanks again,

    Beau

I atually meant two instances of Shatter; one for each layer. IOW, you’ll need two layers and not just two instances of Shatter on a single layer which is what you’ve done.

Let the instance with th ebigger pieces contain ALL for the render parameter. For the smaller pieces, set Render to Pieces. And since you don’t want too many pieces, create a smaller image here. Since the un-Shattered layer will not be seen prior to them shattering, it doesn’t really matter what the layer is made up off, as long as it mixes well with the bigger pieces.

I hope this is clear cos’ i’m like juggling a bunch of stuff now and I’m flowing with pure, freshly brewed adrenalin.

Yes, Roland is correct. I would also add that if you think it is “too much” to have the big shatter pieces and small shatter pieces layers, you can mask one to stop the spread. I think this is an easy task for a beginner if you don’t feel like tweeking all the effect settings that you may not yet be familiar with. Perhaps mask the big shatter layer a certain radius from the center, and have all the smaller pieces still flying out (as they probably would go father than big pieces in reality).
