It’s quite possible that I’m doing this a little backwards. My original intent was to put together a rough cut, do some AE work on certain clips, then come back into FCP and get everything nice and tight. Well, I got into it and everything in my FCP timeline is looking like a final cut. There are some clip that I want to take into After Effects, though, and add some subtle ethereal glows.blurs to.

Is there a way to render out a QT movie of an individual clip, without copy/pasting it into a new sequence? I’m thinking I could export the clips I want, put them in a folder, do my AE work, import those finished files back into FCP and just drop them over the originals.

Right, but what’s the best way to get individual clips out of FCP in the first place. In the sequence, I selected a clip and tried export using QT conversion and it seemed to be exporting the whole sequence?

another thing i sometimes do if i want handles is to use the media manager on that single clip.

    select clip, open MM

    COPY mode
    DO delete unused,
    add handles
base media file names on: Clip names
