  compressor; 7d 24p to DVD

  Hi guys

  I am currently finishing up a project shot on a canon 7d @ 23.97p having a headache getting it on to DVD using compressor.

  I have to encode my edit to NTSC DVDs for playback in the USA (I’m in England). I have edited using XDCAM EX proxies at 24p (QT reports the files run at 23.97) and before you say it – I know I should have used prores!

  I am having some success using Compressor, however, I’m not really sure what I’m doing so after confusing myself with research I thought I might ask the pros.

  – Do I need to transcode my 23.97p material to 29.97p for ntsc playback? If so, how do I do that in Compressor?
  – Can DVD players produce interlaced frames for non progressive TVs? i.e if I don’t transcode my project to 29.97 and just tell compressor to make the disc as 23.97p will it work on a non-progressive player/TV?
  – The test I did seemed to work (though I don’t know how) why does my ntsc project playback on my pal DVD player and 4:3 CRT TV? Are all DVD players able to convert now? I couldn’t find anything about my player being able to do NTSC.

  Hi Dan,
  The Hollywood films that you watch in England on DVD, are p24.
  When those DVDS are played in an NTSC player, the device add the Pull-down to get the standard NTSC 29’97 fps.
  PAL DVD players can read these DVDs. The signal is not full PAL standard, but does the trick. Is what we are watching in Europe since years.

  Your progressive movie can be read as Progressive pr Interlaced without problem.
  You are fallowing the proper workflow.

  24p is fine in compressor. What you want to do is use one of the default DVD compression schemes, but make some changes: change to NTSC widescreen so you maintain your 16×9 – DVD players will see the non-square pixel ratio and auto-expand or auto-letterbox for 4×3 TVs. I’m assuming you are using 16×9 footage. It’s basically still 720×480, but the non-square pixels let you pack in an anamorphic setup. The discs seem to burn fine.

  Thanks for clearing that up. I think I totally understand now.

  24p seems to be a nice kind of universal format for both systems. Can NTSC players pull down from Pal 25 to NTSC 29.97 in the same way?
