  Audio Synching Issues

  Hi Cows,

  We have a very odd problem with a complex workflow hopefully someone can help with.

  The workflow is below and the trailer that is being cut contains element as listed in the workflow.

  1st Step

  Xilisoft DVD Ripper

  Video – Pal

  720 x 480 – 720 x 576

  Framerate up to 25 fps

  RIP DVD.

  This takes the DVD footage upscales it to 25 fps.

  2nd Step

  Create FC sequence @ 25 fps DV

  Lay file into sequence and export to DV res 25 fps of ripped content to .mov file

  This step makes the .mov file

  3rd Step

  Open Cinema Tools and choose File Batch Conform

  Locate .mov and open choose frame rate 24 fps hit conform.

  This downscales the 25 fps back down to 24 fps

  4th Step

  Open FCP Drag .mov into timeline in 24 fps project

  Export using native project export settings with no changes.

  So this part of the workflow makes the .mov in 24 fps

  Audio Stage

  1st Step

  Digitize machine get OMF’s from client source (CD or DVD)

  Open Automatic Duck from FCP Import menu

  Convert to DV Pal 48 khz 24 fps.

  Automatic Duck places Audio into FCP

  Manually line up video track in FCP

  The video and audio is manually aligned so it is in synch.

  The Quicktime files that the project is made of are all in synch. When previewed the audio appears in synch on dialogue but the sound effects line up perfectly. It is a bizarre problem.

  The OMF’s contain the elements and the Automatic Duck places them into FCP. The dialogue is a different track but why would the effects be in synch and parts of the dialogue are fine, it may be elements of the dialogue are ADR but they appear in synch fine in Quicktime, but not FCP output to a Plasma display.

  The Mac Pro is part of a Fabric with dual screens attached to the DVI card supplied by Apple. A Blackmagic card puts the output to the Plasma.

  Could it be anything to do with the Blackmagic card output? It is driving us all insane.

  How do you know the source footage on the DVD wasn’t 25fps?

  Hi Jerry,

  If it wasn’t then it was as it is scaled up to 25 fps. If you read through the steps I outlined you’ll see the work flow. It is then scaled down to 24 fps.

  Thanks for your help, any ideas?
