  • Can’t export chapter markers

Posted by Alfred Guzzetti on June 29, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I can’t get Compressor or DVDSP or QT player to see the chapter markers I’ve put in my FCP timeline. I’ve read several threads about this and looked through the manual. I’ve left the word CHAPTER enclosed in carats as is in the marker dialogue box. I’ve tried exporting as self-contained and non-self-contained QT movies, with “DVDSP markers” or “Chapter Markers” or “All Markers” selected. I’ve tried bringing the QT files into Compressor or directly into DVDSP. I’ve also tried exporting directly to Compressor from the Timeline. The chapter markers never appear in the Compressor Preview window or in the DVDSP track editor. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Any ideas?

In DVDSP, right click on the track in the timeline and choose “add embeded markers.” Does that help?

I tried it but it didn’t work. But I’m glad to know about that right-click command. Thank you.

Make sure in FCP you are creating the Marker above the video track. Place your playhead where you want the marker a hit M twice. Do not select the track and apply the marker.

Also be sure when adding the marker you add it as a “chapter marker” or else you will see a marker in the timeline but it won’t export.

    Where were you putting them?

In the clip on the timeline instead of at the top of the timeline. I thought that the clip carried the chapter data.

If you have FCP 7, you can export markers as text. Then you can modify this text to the proper format (in excel, for example) and import the markers into DVD studio pro.

So even if your markers didn’t export the first time, you can get them to DVD Studio Pro with “import marker list”.

Thanks for this information. I have FCP 6.0.5 and haven’t upgraded to version 7 because I need to be able to use export subtitles to DVDSP via TitleExchange, which depends on XML text exports. Spherico, which makes TitleExchange, issued a warning that FCP 7 doesn’t export line-breaks correctly as earlier versions did. This creates a laborious work-around. I don’t know if this has been fixed yet.

To alter line break types you can use the free TextWrangler app from the great folks at Barebones (BBedit).
