  Hi,

  I’m buying a mac and considering getting the 17″ model for the ExpressCard/34 slot. I have three questions:

  A. How much of an improvement is eSATA over Firewire 800? I’ve read several posts online and I’ve got mixed opinions. Is it worth the +400$ for the 17″ model?
  I’ll add that I’ll be editing a large variety of footage, from dvcpro to red.
  B. What adapter are you recommending?
  C. Is there any eSATA hard disk you recommend?

  FW800 maxs out at about 80MB/s. eSATA can go upwards of 280MB/s….depending on the drive. Two drive Raid 0 like the Caldigit VR and GRAID 3 got those numbers.

  I got some $29 one from Fry’s Electronics…non-brand name.

  G-Raid 3, Caldigit VR, VR Mini. I’m REALLY liking my VR mini lately.

  i just bought a little docking station (ICYBOX) that lets me slot in any 2.5″or 3.5″ sata hdd, and it connects to my laptop by either eSata or USB2. Along with a lacie esta expressport connector.

  Didn’t record any stats but watching it transfer over a 100 gb of data using esata was astonishingly fast!
