    Hi guys,
All this upgrading and not being able to upgrade without an Intel processor is driving me nuts. I have 2 questions/issues.

One, is it possible to put an Intel chip in a Mac so I can upgrade my FCP, or do I need a whole new computer?

Now on to my project issue. I’m taking over a FCP7 project and I’ve got 6. The other editor created an XML for me in hopes that would work. But it has not. It starts to load and then around 45% of the way in, it slows to a crawl for the rest of the load and then opens empty. I know there are a million variables to try but…any suggestions? I am on a Mac Dual 2GHz Power PC G5 w/2GB DDRSDRAM and 512kb L2 cache. I’m not big on the tech stuff so splain it to me like I’m a 3 year old.

You have to tell the FCP7 editor that they will have to export the XML using version 4. FCP6 is not XML version 5 compatible.

Thanks for the quick response Wayne! I’ve sent your message to the other editor. Hopefully he will not say that it was ver.4. If it was, “I’ll be back!”

In regards to your computer, the intel chip is a lot of the price of it, so no it can’t be put into an older mac cos all the parts are incompatible. If you’re serious about editing, you should upgrade to a quad core anyway if you can, even the new quad core MacBook pro range or even an i5 or i7 iMac, although judging by what I’m reading the i5 would be more suitable for you because the i7 would probably be a waste of most for you 🙂

    Tom,
Thanks for the recommendations. Yeah, I didn’t think it would be compatible, because who would buy a new computer if you could just change out the chip for a couple hundred bucks?

    I’m baaaack!
The xml was in ver. 4, so the other editor gave another one using ver.1.
It loaded, however I’ve only been able to re-link the audio clips.
Even if I locate a video clip by name (even though it can find it by search) it still doesn’t re-link after I hit “connect”. Any thoughts, suggestions? Do you think I might have better luck with a ver. 2 or 3 xml? BTW, these clips are on the same drive they were sent to me on.

    Thanks,
    Chaz

Try to split the project into smaller parts and export smaller XML files which you import one by one into FCP 6. It seems you have a huge project, and some element is causing the problem. splitting it might allow you to identify the problem.

Always try to break down an insurmountable problem into smaller parts…
