RAID, 1 4 port vs 2 2 port
Does this make a difference in speed?
I am just now going from a (nehelam) internal RAID 0 to an external setup. I got a 12 bay array, which has the 4 port esata connections
I know the bus speed is limited to 3Gb/s ( 300MB/s ) but this is where I get confused. There are 3 open full-length pcie slots on my new Mac Pro. Is that considered 1 bus? In which case 1 4-port pcie card would be best. Or is each slot considered a bus, and therefor I should get 2 x 2-port PCIe cards, which I can then get 6Gb/s and set this up as RAID 0+1. I may be looking at this too simple though. Being that it would be RAID 0+1, maybe that wouldnt make a difference either way, and I’d be stuck at 3Gb/s no matter what, since one card would be half the bank of the array, and the other card would be the redundancy, thus I would still be getting 3Gb/s???

Logic tells me to go with 2 cards (assuming they are not the same bus) and then I can get 3Gb/s to my RAID), and another simultaneous 3Gb/s to the redundant RAID 1. And that if I go with only 1 4-port card, I’m stuck with splitting the 3Gb/s in half so it can write to both sides of the RAID 0 and the 1 ??
