  • Gradient Wipe for Lower 3rds

    Greetings,

Is it possible to use the gradient wipe effect with a greyscale image to create a transition for lower 3rds instead of a clip to clip transition? Whenever I try it, it doesn’t seem to work.

    Many thanks,
    Jeff

Nest your Lower Third. Add a Gradient Wipe transition to the end of the nest. Adjust the Gradient Wipe’s softness and you should be good to go. Best of luck.

Thanks Stephen. Is there a way to apply it to both the in and out points or am I limited to the out?

Yes, Just select the end of the nest or clip and then go up to Effects, Video Transitions, Wipe, Gradient wipe. Then do it again for the in of the clip. Or you can select the first Gradient Wipe and hold down the Option and Shift keys to duplicate the transition and drag it over to the other side of the clip.

I am working on creating a lower 3rds wipe and would like to try this. However, I looked up nesting and I can’t figure out how to nest the gradient wipe inside the lower 3rd title.

Create your nest by selecting your items and then go up to Sequence, Nest Items. Then select the end or beginning of the nest like you would if you where adding any type of dissolve. Go up to Effects, Video Transitions, Wipe, Gradient Wipe.

If you want me to post a project file let me know.

A project file would be good.

I made something I like in After Effects. It would be nice to be able to make it in FCP as an alternative.

Thanks so much for your help.

Doesn’t seem to work. The gradient wipe seems to be broken here and on other machines. It seems to be pot-luck when it works.

There is or was a free gradient wipe plug-in that worked better then the one on FCP. I can’t remember where I found it. You may want to look for it.

Also, take a look at the video tutorial on gradient wipes by Richard Harrington.

Also, Take a look at this gradient dissolve from Nattress: https://www.nattress.com/Free/freeFCP.htm

Hope this is of some help and best of luck.

Anyone find a gradient wipe plug-in that works on lower thirds?
Must work on stand alone graphics, lower 3rd generator or graphics with an alpha channel.
MUST work on the “in” and “out”.

MacPro 2.26 octo, NVidia GT120, 16GB ram, 4TB SATA Raid that now works in SL, SLeopard 10.6.6, FCPStudio 3, QT 7, Kone LHe
