How to make video show through text..
Posted by Austin Steele on June 3, 2010 at 5:43 amIts a common technique, where you have a black frame with text but there is video that is playing through the text. I tried playing with the composite mode but that didnt do it..
Any one know how?

June 3, 2010 at 5:52 amCreate your text in white with a black background, then place it on a video track beneath the video you want to fill the letters with and change the composite mode to travel matte luma. I think there’s a tutorial for this online here at the cow… might search for it.
Or you can do much the same with the “outline text” tool found in the generator pop up menu. Make the outline something else, or size it to zero to not have an outline. But doing this will only put the first frame or a freeze frame of video in the text. To make it move do it the way I explained first.

June 3, 2010 at 6:10 amAnother way to do this is to create the title white with any of the text tools, then change the composite mode of the upper video to travel matte alpha. This would allow you to put a different background underneath the text filled with the video above it.

June 3, 2010 at 2:28 pmI tried this and it works but the video on V1 that shows through the text is black and white. Why?

June 3, 2010 at 5:18 pmIt should be in color… you’ve done something wrong. Apply the composite mode ONLY to the text track for starters.

April 19, 2011 at 1:04 amI’m sorry Jerry Hofmann, you’re close, but not entirely correct. First, place the text track underneath the video track and clip that you want to appear through the text. Next, select the video clip and choose Modify>Composite>Travel Matte – Alpha. BAM! The video should now appear through the text.
