Relinking P2 material in Final Cut Pro 7
Hello all. My first post here. I looked through the forums but couldn’t find anyone who answered my question.
I have to go back to an old project I edited in 2008. It was shot with a P2 and edited with Final Cut Pro 6 (or might even be 5, back then). The files have been switched to a new drive a couple of days ago for me to be able to rework on it, and when I open the project, it tells me that I have to relink all the files.
My problem is that I can’t seem to be able to relink them. I can’t find any of the Quicktime files in the entire folder, and it seems like I used the MXF files all along to edit.
I didn’t knew that much about editing back then, so I probably made a bunch of errors while setting my workflows. And since then, I haven’t worked that much with P2 files, so I’m at loss at what I should do to relink them. However, I still have all the LASTCLIP.txt and CONTENTS folder, which should help.

Open the log and transfer window, then add all of your footage there.
Then select an offline clip in the browser and choose ‘batch capture’
If you edited the MXF files natively, then you need the QT component you used to edit with, namely Calibrated Software or MXF4mac.

If you edited the raw MXF files directly, then you needed a third party application. Raylight, Calibrated, MXF4QT. Do you have any of those? Do they ring a bell? If so, you might need to contact them on how to reconnect the media that you used them to access.

Woah, looks like my troubles aren’t over. It turns out I edited some parts of the videos with the Quicktime files, which I was able to reconnect, but a pretty large part of the edit looks like it was made directly with the MXF files.
When I look in the timelines, it’s the MXF files that are there, with cuts, fades, etc. Only, when I try to play them, it’s only a white screen. I’m pretty sure I didn’t use any other application to do this, none of those you named reminded me of anything.
Also, in the navigator, I see that I imported the entire CONTENTS folder, with the AUDIO, ICON and VIDEO folders in it. It seems like this is where I took my MXF files. I kinda remember that I MAY have had to connect manually the audio files with the video files. Also, I think I worked on FCP 5 back then, maybe this could make a difference.
So, if anyone can understand how I worked back then, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

P2CMS installed an MXF QT component. That allowed you to import the MXF files, albeit it would import the AUdio and Video separately, and you’d have to merge them with the MERGE CLIPS command, or however you did it.
See what happens when you don’t do things the right way? or at least know what you did? Walking blindly into things means that you can’t recreate them when you have issues. This is why it is best to Log and Transfer, or purchase a third party MXF solution, and remember what that solution was.

Alright, so if P2CMS installed that MXF QT component on my drive, why isn’t it there anymore? Should I reinstall it? Does it still work in FCP 7?

You need to reinstall P2CMS. Once installed, look in HardDrive > Library > Quicktime and you shoudl see MXFImporter.component
