I want to keep space open on my hard drive for everything to run smoothly during post. Has anyone had experience simply keeping all the source files on an external hard drive, or would that create complications when writing the video?

    Thanks in advance

All media files are supposed to be on dedicated media drives other than your system drive – these can be internal or external depending on your computer.
