*Desperate!* Which codecs/formats work in multicam for FCPro?
Hi there.
I am really pulling my hair out on this and Apple support have been, well, useless today!
I record very simple videos for a videoblog using 2 cameras, a flip (mp4) and a sony camcorder (mpeg2).
I know i have to encode these files so they have the same dimensions etc but cannot find one to work when I multicam edit.
I have tried DV Pal, ProRes, H.264. None of these work for me. The windows in the viewer just remain frozen.
I am using a brand new MBP i5 so hardward is not an issue.
What would you recommend i convert my source files to in order to be able to multicam edit with them?

ANything that appears in the EASY SETUP list. But you need to make sure that your hard drives can keep up with the demand that multiple streams of video require. DV…a since. ProRes? FW800 won’t cut it. You’ll need an eSATA RAID or internal SATA raid, or miniSAS raid…basically 2-8 drive RAID. DVCPRO HD can be done with a FW800 drive…two to three streams.
And you need to enable MULTICLIP PLAYBACK in the RT menu.

I totally agree with your point about the external drive, I will definitely implement that.
I am having a serious issue converting the MPEG2 (sony camcorder) file to DV Pal or ProRes 422 in Compressor. Although Compressor sees the file, it fails every time I try to convert it. I have no such problems with the MP4 file from the Flip.
I have tried to use MPEGStreamClip and that is happy to encode the file there but FCPro will not allow the encoded file to be used in multicam.
I really am stumped on this. Surely I will not have to change my camera? Will I?!
There must be some way of making this file compatible… (I hope!)

Then you did something wrong. What did you encode to? Should be a supported FCP codec…something that appears in the EASY SETUP list. Here’s a tutorial:

In addition to what Shane said each video in the multi clip must have the exact same frame detentions and frame rate.
Hindsight is always 1080p

Thank you both for kindly taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it.
I *think* I may have sorted it. I went deep into the settings of the conversions of each file and made sure that everything was identical. I thought they were indentical but it would appear not everything matched. It seems to have worked, fingers crossed.
