HD issues
I have an issue I need help with. We capture for our church broadcast with a Panasonic HPX 300 camera shooting 720P capturing to a Mac Pro using a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card with the capture settings on it at 720p 59.94 Photo JPEG setting. I then have to send this to DVPro tape for our local tv station. The 1st issue is that there is some ghosting on the final product, I assume this could be that framd blending could be checked on the settings. Secondly, what is the best workflow from here to get it to 4:3 for tape, since the tv station is not true HD. I know I could use Compressor to downconvert. Is that the best option ? This is really frustrating.

Seems to me that the blackmagic card is capable of downconverting while capturing… I’d try that for sure. Capture to DV or ProRes then lay that out to tape.

Not the way I would go, The HPX is a P2 solution, I would do a log and transfer to FCP, then let the Decklink do the down convert to the tape deck. A lot of cards (my AJAs do) have center cropping (or letterboxing) when downconverting. That is the way that I would do it.

let me explain further. I am capturing both this and a Sony EX-3 through a broadcast switcher and then going HD-SDI out to the Decklink card on the Mac Pro. I am not capturing to the P2 card.

Unless there is no chance, no way that this is going to be used any other way I would capture as HD then downconvert when going to tape, like I said you should be able to do the pan and scan with the downconvert. This way you future proof the video.

I did the down convert to SD using the Apple Pro Res HQ setting and perfect option. It looks great for my 1 option.. Now I wish I had a Hd/SDI option on my Panasonic AJ-D250 so I could go straight from my Decklink Card to the Panasonic without having to go composite to the Panasonic. I am wondering what the difference between the HD/SDI and the composite would be.

The difference would be very substantially better if you could record the SDI or HDMI signal rather than composite analog.
