size for HD? e.g. 720 x 486
Hi guys I am doing a TV commercial. I have done a few before but that was prior to HD. I alway developed at 720 x 486. What would my dimentions be if I was developing for high definition?

1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080i). Dimensions determined by the camera you shoot with.

Thank you. So if i develop it at 1920×1080 i can size down for any display as long as it is 16:9 right?

Yes you can maintain for 16:9 or 4:3 letterbox and 4:3 Center Cut. Confused? There is a lot to learn. There’s an app for that. Moviola Pro Video Guide.

Thank you. I do a lot of video but almost exclusively for the web. I am doing the animations for the commercial. I am used to specific pixel dimensions. I will just develop in the highest resolution i would need (1900 x 1080) and just scale down keeping the 4 x 3 ratio and i should be fine. You guys have been very helpful i appreciate it.

What does your client want? What does the station want? You need to know what the final deliverable is, then work to that spec.

To clarify. Work in 1920 x 1080 (16×9). If the client wants 720p you can scale down to that (16×9). If the client wants Standard Def, you have 3 options. 4×3 letterbox, 4×3 center punch (you can pan/scan that if needed), or 16×9 anamorphic.
