Take a look at this old iPod Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc8OO_DeggM

I’m trying to do something similar to this, only I want to have the subject standing still and singing lyrics to a song as his clothes change in the shot. (I’d like the background to change with him too if that’s possible) I know this has to do with Matte FXs and green screen in some capacity, but I’m not sure. Are there any tutorials anywhere on this site, or online that someone can point me in the right direction to?

Looks like morphing going on. Do you have a morphing plug-in? CHV has one.

No I don’t but I will get it now that you’ve mentioned it. Thanks. Does the plug-in come with a tutorial?

FYI, there’s a LOT more going on in that spot besides just using morphing software. LOTS!

If you look closely (better yet, look at it frame by frame), you’ll see that there’s a lot of rotoscoping going on.

The arms, jackets, etc. are being used to wipe from one person to the next. Careful addition of shadows helps enhance the illusion.

The process can be very painstaking and it requires a combination of careful planning and craftiness to make it work smoothly.

As for the background changing, just shoot your models against green screen and key them out. Green screen techniques is a whole art unto itself. There’s a lot of info available out there regarding green material, lighting, formats and keying software.

BTW, if I were to do something like this, I’d set up the shots in FCP for timing and getting the right “feel”. But I’d do all the rotoscoping and keying in After Effects.

You can adjust positions and scales in post, but when we did stuff like this, we would actuaslly draw right onto the screen of a production monitor to mark key positions of eyes, ears, nose, mouth, top of head, entire head, or whatever the “landmark” on the body was going to be. Then use that monitor to set up all the raw shots.

You can do this gag as all stop-motion against a green screen, which lets you dress and undress/redress the guy using assistants, and that method could end up using less rotoscoping than anything else.

I like that idea a lot. Marking the monitor sounds very practical and cost efficient. I appreciate everyone’s help.

That’s what I was going to suggest as well. This video is a really good example…. right around 50 seconds
