Take 2 – exporting/burnign HDV 1080i50
Hi again,
No responses to my first post – thought I’d try again… 🙂
I was hired on by a small business to cut a pile of tapes of conferences they held in Europe. (I am in the US – So CA.) While of course I knew of PAL, I never worked in it before, nor did my client realize it was PAL at the time, no suggest it. He is non-tech, and his shooter was from Australia.
Anyway, so the shows were already digitized in HDV 1050i50, 1920 x1440 I believe (or something like that, I’m not at their office right now.) The FCP was 6.0.2.
So, I didn’t realize it was PAL when I was outputting (hadn’t worked in that mode before, and didn’t notice the “50”, thinking it was 1080i30 – I was burned out meeting a deadline) so I mistakenly output in QT @ 1080i30, and the resulting QT had black frames throughout.
I assume this was due to the differing formats? Also, I would like to output in a quicker way – any suggestions as to output/Compressor settings? Client mostly just wants DVDs for presentation and sales. I don’t think he wants or needs to upload.

That’s poor forum etiquette. While you wait, try searching the COW for the hundreds of previous posts here that discuss, at length, techniques for standards conversion and best workflow to go from an HD FCP project to SD DVD.
Unfortunately you are not the first person to suffer poor production workflows. Shooting the wrong frame rate used to be a capital offense.

Thank – I actually did do a search, before I even posted the first time.
Unfortunately, I did not shoot or set up the show. I was hired after it was set up, and partially cut to some degree.
Nor was I clued as to how it was shot – I ended up discovering all this stuff myself, and as I said, I have never run into PAL before, much less HDV 1080i50. Some people I’ve been asking queried me as to whether it wasn’t really in 1080p25 – but it isn’t. I checked.
So, sorry to post twice if it’s bad nettiquette, but I really wanted to clear this up, and yes, I did do a search before posting. I always do, before I post anywhere.
