  P2 log & transfer creating “Spanned reels” and how this affects me in the future?

  Hello all,

  Im currently working with some P2 material, and i’ve noticed that whenever a clip is spread over 2 cards, the reel defaults to “Spanned reel”.

  So how does this affect me? This is a pretty large project, so im making sure everything is re-connectable from the original card back-ups. If i leave the clips with the “Spanned reel” information, it wont know from what card to pull it from (i clicked “Batch capture” on one and it did indeed ask me for the “Spanned Reel” card).

  But if i manually change the reel info to, lets say, “Card_0001”, will it remember that this clip is spanned and is actually spread over card 0001 AND 0002?

  I’ve looked everywhere and i havent seen this discussed at all. This article at moviola.com says the following:

  “Logging Spanned Clips: There is only one small issue related to spanned clips. Notice in the next screenshot that the spanned clip shows which volumes contain the spanned clip, but the default “Reel” field that will be used during import just says “Spanned Reel”.

  To avoid possible future confusion, you may want to re-label the Reel field to indicate which volumes this clip comes from.”

  …so i take it i should manually type in the correct reel info.

  I’d go ahead and experiment if it will be able to re-import from the card back-ups but i dont have them with me.

  Has anyone had any experience with this?

  Sure. Although I don’t use log and transfer very much anymore as I work with native MXF, I used to put both names of the cards of the span, just for my own organization. FCP does not use that information to gather the media, it uses a much different part of the p2 file to reconnect. The reel name is really only for your reference. You will be just fine. You could put anything you want in the reel name, and FCP would be able to reconnect. If you put in the proper card number, you can then point FCP to that card if you need to reconnect. I would usually just load all of the cards from the project to prevent headaches. FCP knows what to do if you present all of the cards at once.
