25fps to 23.98
Greetings,
We have some footage coming in from a videographer that was shot at 25fps, AVCHD (I believe some Sony high-end consumer camera.)
We need to convert/conform it to 23.98 ProRes, as the majority of our assets will be 23.98, and final delivery of the cuts will be 23.98 HDCAM SR.
How does one convert hours of 25fps footage to 23.98, and do it well enough that it will pass QC? I know Cinema Tools provides a “conform to 23.98”, but that slows it down, slightly, with pitch shift and everything… and doesn’t seem to play back very well. Any other options, most especially through Compressor?

Make a 23.98 compressor preset, set Frame Controls to High for rate conversion. It’ll do an OK job.

Thanks, giving it a whirl… will let you know how it goes. The 00:00:03:19 test clip is taking 15 minutes+, so I may end up tweaking a couple settings, but hopefully this is the ticket. I also set the Duration to 100%, under the frame controls.

Do you have a MacPro? You really want to set up for cluster rendering ….. it takes a LOT of time when you crank those frame controls up.

Right, it’s actually an 8-core with 12GB RAM.
In the end (17 minutes later), it looks fairly poor… very apparent interlace fields.
Will try a couple other settings, but certainly chime in if you or anyone else have thoughts!

The repeated mantra in these common conversion threads is that good hardware conversion through a Teranex or similar high end converter is the ticket. All the software options are incredibly slow and second best when they do their best.
If you use software conversion on the rushes, you might then selectively redo the final clips with the Teranex and drop them into the final edit.

Not with AVCHD it won’t. CT will not do frame rate conforms on any long-GOP material.
I would use Compressor to pull it up from 23.98 to 25, frame for frame. If you want, you can then use Soundtrack Pro to re-pitch the audio.

i dont think compressor does that.
i’d use compressor to create a ProRes version with the same frame rate,
THEN use cinema tools to conform to 23.98nick
